How to get second passport - FAQs

Q. Am I eligible for a second British passport?

If you are a frequent business traveller and can provide an employer support letter stating you intend to visit visa entry destinations in the next few years, you should be eligible. You can provide you with a template in order to assist you with the letter. Note that it must carry original signature.

Q. If I am applying for a second British passport, then will my new passport carry the same passport number?

No it will hold a different and unique passport number. A second passport is treated as a separate entity all together.

Q. Is a second British passport a duplicate passport of the same?

No, it is an entirely different passport, holding a different and unique passport number.

Q. Do I need a countersignature for a second British passport?

Yes, for a second British passport, Section 10 must be fully completed. The counter signatory must also sign behind one of your passport sized pictures.

Q. What box do I need to tick in Section 1 of the application form if I am applying for a second British passport?

The one indicating my first British passport.

Q. If I don't want to submit my original passport for a second British passport application, can I provide a photocopy?

Yes, you can provide or a photocopy of the data page of your current passport and a letter addressed to the Passport Office stating the reasons that you cannot provide your current passport

Q. I'm self-employed and want to obtain a second British passport – can I sign my own employer support letter?

The applicant cannot sign his own Employer support letter. A self- employed person can provide a letter signed from his accountant, on the accountant’s letter headed paper.

Q. Would a non UK employer support letter be accepted for a second British passport application?

Yes. Do note that on the letter it must be stated that the applicant intends to return to the UK after each business trip and that it must carry original (pen on paper) signature.
