Renewal of UK Passport - FAQs

Q. 14. Can I renew my passport while it is still valid?

Yes, you can renew your passport while is still valid. Any remaining time left on your passport (up to 9 months) will be added to your new one.

Q. Do I need a countersignature for a child's passport renewal?

You are eligible to renew the passport. Once you renew your passport the previous passport will be officially cancelled and sent back to you. The corner of the cover will be cut off as a sign that it has been officially cancelled.

Q. I want to renew my existing child passport but I am now an adult. Would that be treated as a standard renewal, or a first British passport?

It would be treated as a standard passport renewal allowing you to use the same day, next day or 7day service. Do note though that if your appearance has drastically changed since the issue of your last passport, Section 10 must be fully completed. The counter signatory must also sign behind one of your passport sized pictures.

Q. My passport expired a long time ago and I cannot find it. Can I still renew it?

Your case will be handled as a replacement of a lost passport. That means that it would take a minimum of 7 working days to be processed and once issued, it will be sent directly from the Passport Office to your home address as per the application form. Note that you must also provide an LS01 form, describing how you lost the passport.

Q. Do I need to complete Section 4 / give parents details for a passport renewal?

No, Section 4 does not need to be completed for a passport renewal.

Q. Do I need to complete Section 4 / give parents details for a child's passport renewal?

Yes, Section 4 must be fully completed. If both parents were born outside the UK you will additionally need to provide a letter dated and addressed to the Passport Office giving the same information as per Section 4, for both sets of grandparents.
